Heat, Cold and Electro Therapy in Berlin-Mitte at Gendarmenmarkt

Heat, Cold and Electro Therapy in Berlin-Mitte at Gendarmenmarkt

Heat, cold, and electrotherapy are adjunctive therapies - supportive measures that complement a primary physiotherapy treatment such as Krankengymnastik (KG), Manual Therapy (MT), Manuelle Lymphdrainage (MLD), or KG-ZNS. At our practice in Berlin Mitte at Gendarmenmarkt, we use these therapies in a targeted way: to prepare tissue for active treatment, to relieve pain, to reduce swelling, or to stimulate circulation — always as part of an evidence-based plan that centres on active therapy.

About Adjunctive Therapies

What are Adjunctive Therapies?

Adjunctive therapies — in German „ergänzende Heilmittel“ — are physical measures that support an active physiotherapy treatment. The German remedies catalog lists them as add-ons to a primary remedy such as Krankengymnastik, Manual Therapy, or Manuelle Lymphdrainage. They are not designed to be billed on their own through statutory health insurance — they amplify the effect of the main treatment.

At Somana, we use three groups of adjunctive therapies: heat therapy, cold therapy , and electrotherapy. In each case we choose the modality based on your symptoms, the tissue we want to address, and the goal of the session — for example: relaxing musculature before an active exercise block, calming an acutely irritated joint, or supporting pain modulation in chronic complaints.

In contrast to the general term „physiotherapy“, which is an umbrella term covering all therapeutic procedures, adjunctive therapies are specific physical applications. They are deliberately combined with active Krankengymnastik or Manual Therapy in the same session, because their effect is greatest when paired with movement and education — not as a passive stand-alone.

Treatment goals

Goals of Adjunctive Therapies

At Somana in Berlin Mitte, we pursue clear, measurable goals with every application of heat, cold, or electrotherapy:

Pain reduction

Modulating pain perception so that active exercises become possible and more effective.

Reducing muscular tension

Preparing tense or guarded musculature before manual or active therapy.

Reducing acute swelling and inflammation

Calming irritated tissue, particularly after injury or surgery.

Improving circulation

Stimulating local blood flow to support tissue regeneration.

Education and self-management

You learn which applications you can use safely at home - and when professional treatment is the right choice.

Who are Adjunctive Therapies Suitable For?

Adjunctive therapies are suitable for people of all ages who are receiving a primary physiotherapy treatment and would benefit from supportive physical measures. At our practice in Berlin Mitte, we typically use them in the following contexts:

Acute musculoskeletal complaints

for example acute back pain, sprains, or post-traumatic swelling

Chronic pain syndromes

back, neck, shoulder, hip, knee, joint-related complaints

Post-operative rehabilitation

for swelling, pain modulation, and muscle re-activation

Inflammatory and rheumatic conditions

with medical clearance

Neurological complaints

e.g. electrotherapy to support muscle activation in selected cases, in coordination with the treating neurologist

Preparation for Manual Therapy or Krankengymnastik

heat or electrotherapy to relax musculature before active work

Every treatment is individually tailored to you – based on your symptoms, movement habits, and personal goals.

Steps

Course of Adjunctive Therapies at Somana, Gendarmenmarkt

1

Initial Consultation and Assessment

In your first session at our practice in Berlin Mitte, we take time for a detailed medical history. We discuss your diagnosis, surgeries, medical clearances, medication, and goals. This is followed by a structured assessment of the affected region as well as safety-relevant screenings (e.g. contraindications for heat, cold, or electrical current — such as pacemakers, sensory deficits, vascular disease, or skin conditions).

2

Reviewing Your Prescription and Treatment Plan

Based on the assessment, we create a treatment plan with clear goals. You will know from the start what we are working toward.

Application After the Active Treatment

Adjunctive therapies always follow the active part of your treatment within the same appointment, each lasting 10 minutes. Heat and cold are applied passively, without a therapist present — you rest comfortably while the warmth or cooling acts on the targeted area, prolonging the effect of the treatment block that preceded it. Electrotherapy is different: it takes place on our training area together with your therapist, where the current is combined with active movement, stabilising exercises, or guided muscle activation.

Home Recommendations and Education

You will receive clear explanations of your symptoms and practical recommendations for use at home: which applications make sense, how long they should last, when to use heat versus cold, and what to avoid.
