About Manual Therapy

What is Manual Therapy?

Manual Therapy – „MT“ for short – is a remedy treatment prescribed by a physician and performed by physiotherapists with certified additional training. It is part of modern, evidence-based physiotherapy and serves the targeted assessment and treatment of functional disorders of the joints, muscles, and nerves.

Manual Therapy does not only mean passive treatment. In addition to manual techniques such as mobilization, traction, soft-tissue techniques, or neurodynamic procedures, it also includes education, active exercises, and individual movement strategies.

In contrast to the general term „physiotherapy", which is an umbrella term covering all therapeutic procedures (Krankengymnastik, lymphatic drainage, electrotherapy, etc.), Manual Therapy specifically describes the active and passive treatment of tissues and joints – and particularly the modulation of pain processing in the nervous system.

Treatment goals

Goals of Manual Therapy

At Somana in Berlin Mitte, we pursue clear, measurable goals with every Manual Therapy treatment:

Pain Reduction

Targeted mobilization, education, and guidance on correct behavior actively relieve pain

Restoring Joint Mobility

Restricted mobility is restored with the help of active and passive mobilization.

Improving Neuromuscular Control

After mobilization, we actively retrain correct movement patterns so that your joint remains stable and resilient.

Education and Self-management

You understand your symptoms and their triggers, and learn how to continue working on them independently.
