About Equipment Based Physiotherapy

What is Equipment based Physiotherapy?

Equipment based physiotherapy – referred to in practice as „KGG" – is a remedy treatment prescribed by a physician that may only be provided by physiotherapists with certified additional training in a certified training environment. It is used specifically to restore full physical resilience after injuries, surgery, or for chronic conditions – using medical training equipment, cable pulleys, free weights, and functional training.

KGG enables a high training intensity and precise control of the workload. It thus closes the important gap between therapy and independent, long-term training.

Treatment goals

Goals of Equipment based Physiotherapy

At Somana in Berlin Mitte, we pursue clear, measurable goals with every KGG treatment:

Building Strength and Muscle Mass

Weakened muscles are built up systematically and safely under therapeutic supervision – with the right dosage of load, repetitions, and rest.

Restoring Full Resilience

After surgery or injury, your body is gradually made more resilient – until you are fully back in everyday life, work, and sport.

Improving Core and Joint Stability

Stabilizing muscle groups are specifically trained to protect the joints and prevent harmful loading patterns.

Pain Reduction through Movement

For chronic back, knee, or shoulder complaints, progressive training has been shown to be one of the most effective means of long-term pain relief.

Education and Self-management

You understand how load, recovery, and progression relate to each other – and can continue your training independently after therapy ends.

Who is Equipment based Physiotherapy Suitable For?

Equipment based physiotherapy is suitable for people who want to specifically build strength, stability, and resilience after an injury, surgery, or for chronic conditions. At our practice in Berlin Mitte, we particularly often encounter the following areas of application:

After surgery

e.g., after knee or hip replacement, cruciate ligament reconstruction, meniscus surgery, shoulder surgery, or disc surgery

Chronic back and neck pain

particularly in cases of muscular deconditioning and non-specific low back pain

Sports injuries and overuse syndromes

in the build-up and return-to-sport phase

After fractures and prolonged immobilization

to restore strength and muscle mass

Osteoarthritis and Osteoporosis

bone-strengthening and safe strength training under guidance

Scoliosis and postural problems

with targeted stability and strengthening training

Every treatment is individually tailored to you – based on your symptoms, movement habits, and personal goals.

Steps

Course of a KGG Session at Somana, Gendarmenmarkt

1

Initial Consultation and Detailed Assessment

Based on the assessment, we create a training plan that fits you precisely – with a sensible selection of exercises, coordinated dosage (sets, repetitions, load), and clear milestones. You will know from the start what load is safe and what the path to full resilience looks like.

3

Training in a Small Group

From the second appointment onward you train in a small group of up to three people. Each person follows their own individual training plan – so it is not group training in the traditional sense, but parallel, individualized training under therapeutic supervision. Your physiotherapist actively supports you: corrects your form, controls the load, and continuously adjusts the training to your progress.

4

Home Exercises and Education

Alongside the training at the practice, you receive clear explanations on load, technique, and progression – including a plan for how to continue training independently in a studio or at home after therapy ends. The greatest progress comes from the combination of therapeutic guidance and personal responsibility.
